Woods's latest (after Palindrome ) is a slick thriller
set in Manhattan's Upper East Side, the stomping ground of Stone Barrington, a
well-bred but unpretentious detective who, in a city of several million people,
always ends up in the right place at the right time. Late one evening, as Stone
trudges home from Elaine's Restaurant, popular TV newscaster Sasha Nijinsky
plummets 12 stories from her terrace and lands on a heap of dirt 20 yards away
from him--remarkably, still alive. Stone fails to apprehend the person who flees
Sasha's penthouse and, after the ambulance carrying her collides with a fire
truck, Sasha herself disappears. Despite the fact that no corpse is in evidence,
the baffled NYPD eagerly pins a murder rap on Sasha's distraught lesbian lover.
Stone refuses to accept his colleagues' pat solution and even maintains that
Sasha might have survived thanks to skydiving training and her billowing,
parachute-like robe. Bed-hopping TV newspeople, a sexy blonde judge sporting a
red dress beneath her robes, a serial killer targeting cabbies and a creepy
med-school dropout turned mortician who idolizes Sasha romp through this
calculatedly melodramatic crime story all the way to its grisly B-movie finale.

Every seven years, on the seventh day of the seventh month, strange things
happen. It began when three young boys - Caleb, Fox, and Gage - went on a
camping trip to the Pagan Stone. And twenty-one years later, it will end in a
showdown between evil and the boys who have become men - and the women who love
them… This modern-day legend draws reporter and author Quinn Black to Hawkins
Hollow with the hope of making the eerie happening the subject of her new book.
It is only February, but Caleb Hawkins, descendent of the town founders, has
already seen and felt the stirrings of evil. Though he can never forget the
beginning of the terror in the woods twenty-one years ago, the signs have never
been this strong before. Cal will need the help of his best friends, Fox and
Gage, but surprisingly he must rely on Quinn as well. She, too, can see the evil
that the locals cannot, somehow connecting her to the town – and to Cal. As
winter turns to spring, Cal and Quinn will shed their inhibitions, surrendering
to a growing desire. They will form the cornerstone of a group of men and women
bound by fate, passion, and the fight against what is to come from out of the
darkness

At 27 books and counting, Nora Roberts is more
prolific under her Robb pseudonym than most authors manage in a single career.
Yet the latest in her not-so-near-future detective series featuring New York
Police Det. Eve Dallas offers a satisfyingly novel mélange of suspense, sex,
forensics and heroics. It's 2060, and the serial killer nicknamed The Groom is
back in town after an absence of nine years, resuming his horrific run of
kidnapping, torturing and killing young women. Dallas, who served as a detective
in the frustrating first investigation, assumes lead role in this one. This
time, not only do the killer's chosen victims have ties to Dallas's husband,
Roarke, but Dallas herself may be the killer's ultimate target. Swiftly paced,
the story cuts frequently from the investigation to the killer's progress with
his victims. Dallas works to outplan, outfight and outsmart the killer; to keep
her handsome, rich husband happy; and to be ready for the next round after a
good night's sleep. Robb's latest is bound to please Dallas fans.

Koontz's tale of a man, a woman and a dog on the run
from a high-tech rogue government agency was a PW bestseller for nine weeks.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of
print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Spencer Grant
is on the run from a nameless, violent government agency. His goal is to keep
away from his pursuers long enough to find the woman he met the night before,
who appears to be their real target. Spencer has no idea why they want to kill
Valerie Keene, but his brief acquaintance with her has convinced him that the
killers have no good reason for wanting her dead. With his game but fearful dog,
Rocky, Spencer leads the killers on a frustrating chase. By the end of the
story, Spencer must confront his own personal demons as well as the bizarre
sociopathic agent leading the hunt. The government's activities-especially the
incredible surveillance techniques that Koontz, in an afterword, claims are
currently being used-help create an atmosphere of intense paranoia and fear.
This superb suspense novel will surely delight the author's many fans.

A brush with death prompts L.A. policeman Jack McGarvey to move wife Heather and son Toby up to Quartermass Ranch, a Montana estate bequeathed to them by Eduardo Fernandez, the father of Jack's former partner. The McGarveys settle in, dismissing strange noises and smells, as well as weird trances that seem to grip Toby from time to time, as the embodiment of common fears of urbanites confronted by open spaces. It seems Eduardo had had uninvited visitors: the Givers, creatures from another dimension who came for an incomprehensible, apparently evil purpose. Scared out of his wits, Ed succumbed to a heart attack, but not before scrawling his discovery on a legal pad and stashing it in the freezer. These Givers are actually takers, assuming control of bodies and corpses to use them as vehicles in which to create mayhem. And now they want control of Toby.
| Home to Holly Springs (Father Tim, Book 1) Author: Karon, Jan Sowers, Scott (Contributor) ISBN: 0-14-314254-2 |
Audio CD Penguin Audio
Karon's bestselling series of Mitford novels has
concluded with 25 million copies sold to date, but to the relief of eager fans,
she introduces a new series featuring Father Tim. The beloved Episcopal priest
returns to his childhood town of Holly Springs, Miss., where he reconnects with
old friends and battles some old demons. The novel is thick with Father Tim's
past, as Karon uses flashbacks to shed light on his early adulthood, especially
his transition to seminary. In Holly Springs, his penchant for getting near
strangers to open up to him--and his earnest, moving reflections on faith,
prayer and the risks of love--are reassuringly present. His wife, Cynthia, is on
stage far less than he, but when she appears, she is charming and insightful, as
usual. Yet the book is far from perfect. Development of the quirky locals in
Holly Springs is thin, and the end is a tad abrupt. Most frustratingly, the
central drama of the novel falls flat: Father Tim discovers a long-buried family
secret, but he doesn't grapple deeply enough with the emotional consequences of
his discovery, nor does Karon fully explore the ways in which the secret plunges
us into the Southern quagmire of race. Still, Mitford fans will enjoy this
newest visit with wise, winsome, lovable Father Tim.

Ha Jin, who emigrated from China in the aftermath of
Tiananmen Square, had only been writing in English for 12 years when he won the
National Book Award for Waiting in 1999. His latest novel sheds light on an
émigré writer's woodshedding period. It follows the fortunes of Nan Wu, who
drops out of a U.S. grad school after the repression of the democracy movement
in China, hoping to find his voice as a poet while supporting his wife,
Pingping, and son, Taotao. After several years of spartan living, Nan and
Pingping save enough to buy a Chinese restaurant in suburban Atlanta, setting up
double tensions: between Nan's literary hopes and his career, and between Nan
and Pingping, who, at the novel's opening, are staying together for the sake of
their young boy. While Pingping grows more independent, Nan--amid the dulling
minutiae of running a restaurant and worries about mortgage payments, insurance
and schooling--slowly snuffs the torch he carries for his first love. That Nan
at one point reads Dr. Zhivago isn't coincidental: while Ha Jin's novel lacks
Zhivago's epic grandeur, his biggest feat may be making the reader wonder
whether the trivialities of American life are not, in some ways, as strange and
barbaric as the upheavals of revolution

Laurel Shields, thirty-five and mother of two, awakens to
find that her husband, Warren, a prominent local physician, is not in bed with
her. Creeping out to the kitchen of their palatial home, she sees him through
the doorway of his study, wildly pulling books from the shelves. Two weeks
earlier, Warren and his partner were informed by the IRS that their medical
practice was being audited; since then the stress on Dr. Shields has steadily
ratcheted up. But Laurel has problems of her own. Quickly returning to the
bedroom, she locks herself in the master bath, opens a home pregnancy testing
kit, and fearfully tests herself. PREGNANT, announces the digital readout.
Laurel closes her eyes as though absorbing news of a death, then quickly hides
the evidence. She is not sure who the father is. Summoning all her strength, she
walks into the kitchen to carry out the acting performance of her life. Later
that morning, Laurel returns home and is surprised to find her husband’s car
still parked in the driveway. The house has a strange stillness to it. In the
den, she finds Warren sitting on the sofa in the same clothes he wore the
previous day. His face is pale and unshaven, his eyes hollow with fear. Then, in
come the children, innocent of it all… So begins the most terrifying day in the
history of a marriage, one that in less than five hours will make the Shields
house the vortex of a nerve-wracking siege. While a nervous ring of armed men
awaits its chance to storm the suburban home, inside the house the clock ticks
down on exposure of Laurel’s terrible secret. But she is not alone in her lies.
Before the siege is through, this terrifying drama will pull in desperate
characters from the town and drive Dr. Shields, his wife, and her lover to the
very brink of sanity and survival.

Known for her popular Calder saga set in Montana
(Calder Storm, etc.), Dailey turns her attention to the Ten Bar Ranch, near
Glory, Wyo. (pop. 51), run by a young, laid-back widower, Luke McCallister.
Still grieving over losing his family four years earlier, Luke, who swigs
whiskey to dull the pain, isn't particularly rattled when a skeleton turns up on
his property. He is surprised, however, by his attraction to redheaded Angie
Sommers, an Iowa school teacher who comes to Glory after being notified that the
remains appear to be of Henry James Wilson, her long missing grandfather. Henry
James's grandfather was Ike Wilson, a train robber executed on the gallows: the
skeleton's presence on Luke's land suggests that Ike's missing treasure may be
there, too. Saddlebags Smith, a local gold-hunting eccentric, warns the two that
lookin' for that gold will make you crazy while Luke's ranch hands and another
townie complicate matters. Veteran tale-spinner Dailey depicts ranching life
with a sure-handed, affectionate humor.

. The modern-day paladins of the Camel
Club are back in their third exciting adventure (after 2006's The Collectors).
Justice-seekers Milton, Caleb, Reuben and honorary member Alex Ford, a Secret
Service agent, are led by feisty Oliver Stone, aka former CIA assassin John
Carr. Their associate, Annabelle Conroy, is a slick con artist on the run after
stealing $40 million from lunatic casino owner Jerry Bagger, who killed her
mother. Oliver's CIA past distracts him from Annabelle's cause: his old unit,
Triple 6, was responsible for the death of Raymond Solomon, branded a traitor
during the Cold War, and now Solomon's son, DHS security expert Harry Finn, is
picking off Triple 6 members. Oliver could be next if Carter Gray, his former
boss, reveals that John Carr isn't really dead. Gripping, chilling and full of
surprises, Baldacci's latest reveals the anarchy that lurks under the slick
facade of corrupted governments. (Nov.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a
