Last seen in Split Second (2003), former Secret
Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have reached a crisis in their
relationship in this less than compelling Washington political thriller from
bestseller Baldacci. When Maxwell instigates a fight with the most intimidating
bruiser she could find at a local bar and lets herself be beaten unconscious,
despite her superior fighting skills, her partner suggests she voluntarily
commit herself to a psychiatric facility. While Maxwell reluctantly undergoes
treatment to find the childhood roots of her death wish, King probes the suicide
of a scientist found on the grounds of Virginia's Camp Peary, a mysterious CIA
facility.

Paul "Cope" Copeland, acting county prosecutor
for Essex County, N.J., and Lucy Gold, his long-lost summer camp love, are still
haunted by a fateful night, decades earlier, when their nighttime tryst allowed
some younger campers, including Cope's sister, to venture into the nearby
forest, where they apparently fell victim to the Summer Slasher, a serial
killer. Cope's intense focus on a high-profile rape prosecution of some wealthy
college students shifts after one of the Slasher's victims, whose body was never
found, turns up as a recent corpse in Manhattan, casting doubt on the official
theory of the old case. Cope's own actions on that night again come under
scrutiny, even as the highly placed fathers of the men he's prosecuting work to
unearth as many skeletons as possible to pressure him into dropping the rape
case.
The Witch of Portobello CD [ABRIDGED] [AUDIOBOOK] Author: Coelho, Paulo Rita, Wolf (Narrator) Wolf, Rita ISBN: 0-06-134910-0
Audio CD HarperAudio
Multimillion-seller Coelho (The Devil and Miss Prym, etc.) returns with another uncanny fusion of philosophy, religious miracle and moral parable. The Portobello of the title is London's Portobello Road, where Sherine Khalil, aka Athena, finds the worship meeting she's leading--where she becomes an omniscient goddess named Hagia Sophia--disrupted by a Protestant protest. Framed as a set of interviews conducted with those who knew Athena, who is dead as the book opens, the story recounts her birth in Transylvania to a Gypsy mother, her adoption by wealthy Lebanese Christians; her short, early marriage to a man she meets at a London college (one of the interviewees); her son Viorel's birth; and her stint selling real estate in Dubai. Back in London in the book's second half, Athena learns to harness the powers that have been present but inchoate within her, and the story picks up as she acquires a "teacher" (Deidre O'Neill, aka Edda, another interviewee), then disciples (also interviewed), and speeds toward a spectacular end. Coelho veers between his signature criticism of modern life and the hydra-headed alternative that Athena taps into.
Leopards Kill [ABRIDGED] [AUDIOBOOK] [CD] Author: DeFelice, Jim Dufris, William (Narrator) Dufris, William ISBN: 1-4233-3155-9

DeFelice has fashioned a powerful quest novel out of
what could have been just a clever homage to Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Mercury
"Merc" Conrad, on a shadowy assignment into present-day Afghanistan, has
disappeared with $2 million of CIA money, which the agency wants back. Since
Merc saved the life of his friend and business partner, ex-Special Forces
soldier Jack Pilgrim, on three earlier occasions, Jack sets out to find and
rescue Merc. The journey takes Jack deep into Afghanistan, a heart of darkness
if there ever was one, propelling him to the very edge of civilization and
beyond. Jack fights for his life on almost every page with the action slacking
off only in the rare moments when he can sit back to rest and ponder questions
of morality, loyalty and honor. DeFelice has coauthored many novels with such
thriller writers as Stephen Coonts and Larry Bond, but this and his other solo
efforts, including Threat Level Black and Coyote Bird, prove that he can write
and fight with the best of them.
The Blue Zone CD [ABRIDGED] [AUDIOBOOK] Author: Gross, Andrew Ilyana, Kadushin (Narrator) Kadushin, Ilyana ISBN: 0-06-128561-7
Audio CD HarperAudio
Having coauthored five bestsellers with James
Patterson (Lifeguard, etc.), Gross makes a solo debut superior to his
collaborative efforts, if short of the first thriller rank. His engaging
heroine, Kate Raab, a medical researcher in the Bronx, is shocked when the Feds
arrest her beloved gold trader father, Benjamin, and charge him with laundering
money for a Colombian drug cartel. A hit team's attempt to kill the entire Raab
family prompts all of them, except Kate, to start their lives anew in the
witness protection program. Kate's choice, predictably, places her in continuing
danger, even as she begins to suspect that her father's involvement with the
narco traffickers was more deliberate and extensive than he's willing to admit.

Since the night she was born, Laura Shane has been continually saved by a
mysterious guardian who appears and disappears without a trail. Through the
years, these random encounters prove more and more life-threatening, sending
Shane down a dark path to which her savior, Stefan, has unintentionally led her
and her family. But as Shane realizes when not where Stefan is from, she must
scramble for her life as her enemies seek her out. Her only hope is in the
knowledge that when lightning strikes, her enemies are near. Koontz isn't the
first author to incorporate lightning with time travel, but he certainly shines
new light on the subgenre of time travel. Koontz's 1988 novel gains new life in
this unabridged production. Christopher Lane captures listeners with a stern and
serious voice that can still lighten up, especially when voicing Shane's son,
Chris, or other colorful characters.
Savage Garden, The [AUDIOBOOK] [CD] [UNABRIDGED] Author: Mills, Mark Stuart, Ian (Narrator) ISBN: 1-4233-3793-X
Audio CD Brilliance Audio on CD Unabridged
Two murders separated by centuries make up the heart
of this excellent literary mystery. Set in the beautiful Tuscan countryside
during the summer of 1958, Mills's novel tells the story of Adam Strickland, an
art history major researching the 16th-century garden on the grounds of the
Villa Docci. As Strickland studies the intricate sculptures and inscriptions in
the garden, he deciphers a series of clues that hint at a murder committed more
than 400 years ago. He also discovers evidence of another murder, this one only
14 years in the past. Unraveling the former mystery will find him a place in
academic history, but solving the latter will place his life in danger. Stuart
brings just the right touch to his reading of this intelligently written story.
With an excellent use of his vocal talents, he moves easily from one character
to another, never overplaying the accents or gender. His descriptive narration
uses Mills's prose to sweep the listener into a classic world of intrigue and
suspense. Fans of P.D. James and the like will enjoy.
