This debut thriller by a 24-year-old author stars an unconventional CIA agent who must track down a renegade former comrade-in-arms. Ryan Kealey, the hero, is a tough, embittered ex-CIA agent; he is engaging enough but hardly original. Jason March, the former U.S. soldier now allied with terrorists, is appropriately villainous, but, again, we've seen his like before. And the story itself, while solidly structured, doesn't stray much from formula.

Best known as the coauthor (with Douglas Preston) of
such bestselling thrillers as Dance of Death, Child delivers a well-crafted and
literate science fiction thriller, his third solo effort (after 2004's Death
Match). Peter Crane, a former naval doctor, faces the challenge of his career
when he investigates a mysterious illness that has broken out on a North
Atlantic oil rig. Sworn to secrecy, Crane is transported from the rig to an
amazing undersea habitat run by the military that's apparently pursuing evidence
that Atlantis exists. Psychotic episodes among the scientific staff as well as
the activities of a saboteur that threatens the project's safety keep Crane
busy, even as some of the staff members confront him with concerns that
exploring the Earth's core could be fatal to all life on earth. Crisp writing
energizes a familiar plot, which builds to an unsettling climax with echoes of
Child and Preston's The Ice Limit.

In bestseller Gardner's first-rate follow-up to Alone (2005), Bobby Dodge, once a sniper for the Massachusetts State Police and now a police detective, gets called to a horrific crime scene in the middle of the night by fellow detective and ex-lover D.D. Warren. An underground chamber has been discovered on the property of a former Boston mental hospital containing six small naked mummified female bodies in clear garbage bags. A silver locket with one of the corpses, which may be decades old, bears the name Annabelle Granger. Later, a woman shows up at the Boston Homicide offices claiming to be Annabelle Granger. Her resemblance to Catherine Gagnon (whose life Bobby saved in Alone) helps stoke a romance between her and Bobby both subtle and sizzling. The suspense builds as the police uncover links between patients at the hospital and long-ago criminal activities. Through expert use of red herrings, Gardner takes the reader on a nail-biting ride to the thrilling climax.

. Kellerman, the son of bestsellers Faye and Jonathan Kellerman, shows that his impressive debut, Sunstroke, was no fluke with this gripping psychological page-turner that echoes the best of Hitchcock. Jonah Stem, a young medical resident at St. Agatha's, a midtown Manhattan teaching hospital, heroically intervenes when he encounters an attractive woman desperately fleeing a knife-wielding assailant early one morning on a street near Times Square. After Stem kills the man in self-defense, he enjoys a brief celebrity, but his life soon becomes complicated when the woman he rescued, Eve Gones, seeks him out and the two begin a frenzied affair. Taken aback by Gones's masochism, Stem attempts to end the relationship, but soon finds himself stalked relentlessly. Kellerman artfully conveys Stem's descent into near madness, making the step-by-step degradation of a decent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time plausible and chilling.

Once again Lt. Eve Dallas shows why she's "New York
City's top murder cop" in Roberts's 24th thriller under her Robb pseudonym set
half a century into the future (after 2006's Born in Death). Dallas tries to
close a case at the exclusive Sarah Child Academy, where two bright 10-year-old
girls discover the body of Craig Foster, a popular history teacher who proves to
have been poisoned by ricin-laced cocoa. Dallas wonders if another staff member
or a parent might be involved, but after the prime suspect, a promiscuous
teacher who's been harassing another employee, turns up dead, the investigation
takes a shocking turn. Besides a provocative puzzler, Robb provides an intense
relationship update on Dallas and Roarke, her Irish power broker hubby, whose
dark past--in the form of a crooked ex-girlfriend--returns to cause trouble.
This prolific author, a recent Quills romance winner, is still at the top of her
game.

At the start of this taut tale of a very bad woman out
to fleece a very good man from bestseller Woods, Santa Fe, N.Mex., lawyer Ed
Eagle wakes up one morning with a terrible hangover and a missing wife. After a
few phone calls, it turns out that not only has his wife, Barbara, disappeared,
she's in the process of taking $5 million of his money with her. Ed, who met
Barbara in an earlier Woods novel, Santa Fe Rules (1992), knew she was a shady
character, but she was also beautiful and fabulous in bed so he married her. He
hires a couple of PIs to find her, but every time they catch up with the
unrepentant Barbara, she shakes them off and gets away. She's the most
compelling character in the book, willing to go to any lengths, including
murder, to keep the money. Scarcely an excess word gets in the way of the
briskly moving plot.
