From Publishers Weekly This compact tome from consultant Slywotzky (The Profit Zone) offers 23 business lessons via the tale of a manager's quest to learn the "art of profitability" from David Zhao, a wise master. It's an attractive and refreshing concept that taps into the Zen of business. The author cautions readers to "please read only one chapter per week... Think about it. Let it stew." His advice, centered around the mantra that the path to profitability lies in fully understanding the customer, is valuable- e.g., watch out for cracks in a business's foundation, because they can quickly lead to a collapse. Slywotzky has tried to make his text seem ancient, even timeless, by featuring the cliché of the wise sage and the eager pupil, and this forced effort may frustrate some readers looking for a quick fix. But those seeking a new alternative to tired business manuals should revel in Zhao's fable-like teachings. From Publishers Weekly Corporate psychologist Tasler draws on years of research and the latest findings in genetics, neurology and management theory to explore the benefits and dangerous consequences of human impulsiveness. At the heart of the author's argument is his pioneering Impulse Factor Test, an online assessment that classifies people as risk managers or potential seekers. According to Tasler, potential seekers are quick to identify new opportunities and are comfortable making important decisions, but their tendency to shoot first and apologize later can lead to trouble if not tempered; conversely, risk managers favor careful nurturing of existing opportunities, providing the stability businesses need to survive, but they often miss opportunities for growth because they are inherently cautious. This intriguing and highly readable analysis demonstrates how both groups can enhance their decision making and is enlivened by dramatic stories of innovators from St. Francis to Bill Gates and scientific reports on impulsiveness in different species and in hyperactive children. Tasler's pragmatic advice on leveraging the talents of both the brash and the bashful make this rewarding reading for anyone in the business world. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Booklist There is no better evidence that the nature-versus-nurture debate is still alive than in Tasler's first book. Here, a group of psychological research consultants, buttressed by bioscientific studies from top institutions and intrigued by the genesis of decision making in U.S. corporations, devises a test to determine if executives/professionals are risk managers or risk takers. Yet, regardless of the test's results, a lower level of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) is one indicator of the “impulsivity gene,” a condition that one-quarter of humans have—as do half of those diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. All is not lost, claims the author. Nature can be tamed by deliberately following a directionally correct path (a la Bill Gates, of Microsoft) and implementing decisions based on facts and analysis. Plenty of examples support his theory, from St. Francis of Assisi's instinctual embrace of a leper (once thought to harbor a contagious disease) to Zach Johnson's win over Tiger Woods in the 2007 Master's Golf Tournament (he attributes his success to playing in the moment). Great ideas and counsel though obscured by too much academic hoo-ha. --Barbara Jacobs --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly A former president of the Coca-Cola Company, Keough has assembled an enviable Rolodex in his 81 years, and his book counts Bill Gates, Jack Welch and Warren Buffett among its champions. His lessons draw upon his long and varied career--from his early days as a philosophy major to his first job as a TV sports announcer and employment at Butternut Coffee and Coca-Cola--and comprise a list of tongue-in-cheek rules guaranteed to make the follower a true loser in business: from quit taking risks and be inflexible to don't take time to think and be afraid of the future. Keough supports his commandments with stories of business mistakes and failures, both his own--the roll-out of New Coke, for example--and those of others--namely, Schlitz beer and IBM. While the author's clear and encouraging tone and renown within the business community will likely garner his effort publicity, the unoriginality of the material--all standard business-book fare simply phrased in the negative--keeps this well-meaning book from standing out or offering original advice to business leaders in the market for a little self-improvement. (Aug.) "" Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Booklist Keough, a distinguished corporate executive, offers a perspective on failure that is especially applicable to leaders who have attained some degree of success. With a foreword by his longtime friend and associate Warren Buffett, the renowned investor, the author presents a chapter on each of his 10 commandments for failure and adds a bonus chapter about how losing passion for work and for life is a certain route to disaster. His failure commandments include stop taking risks; be inflexible; isolate yourself; assume infallibility; play the game close to the foul line (which offers thoughtful commentary on ethics); don't take time to think; put all your faith in outside consultants; love your bureaucracy; send mixed messages; and be afraid of the future. Keough's book is rich with examples of failure, and he gives advice on how to recover from mistakes while learning from them and moving ahead. This is an excellent book with valuable insight for corporate executives and those aspiring to corporate leadership. --Mary Whaley --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly For anyone trapped in an energy-zapping relationship with a co-worker, boss or subordinate, Crowley and Elster offer an exit strategy--a highly practical and easily implemented guide to making the situation workable. Looking at the workplace from every employee's perspective, Crowley, a Harvard-trained psychotherapist, and Elster, an entrepreneurial consultant, have created a book as valuable to readers on the top rungs of the corporate ladder as it is to those near the bottom. Readers in the throes of a work crisis can find a relevant case study to lead them to relief from any situation. Whether the problem's a charming and demanding boss, dealing with a saboteur or addressing one's own inclination to play the office martyr, the authors offer frameworks for breaking down the conflict and achieving détente. They even detail the inevitable verbal confrontation. Supervisors are provided suggestions for "parenting" employees who chronically underachieve or disappoint to help them live up to expectation, or at least their job descriptions. This empowering book delivers a sense of control over nasty workplace situations. It may also offer the answer to high job turnover. (Mar.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Booklist "I don't want to quit my job; I want to quit my manager (or coworker)." If this statement rings true to you, then this guide is exactly what you need to separate yourself from the toxic relationship that is ruining your job. The authors call the experience of being caught in an emotionally distressing situation at work being "hooked," and they provide tools to unhook physically, mentally, and emotionally. They define some of the roles that we play, such as hero, caretaker, rebel, martyr, peacemaker, or entertainer. Playing a role is a hook, too, because it holds us back from realizing our true potential. We naturally fall into certain roles, and the authors provide ways to break out of our comfort zone to expand and thrive at work. The guide is short on analysis and long on ideas and examples to help you survive in the often-claustrophobic space called "the office." Harvard-trained psychotherapist Crowley and small-business expert Elster are published authors, educators, consultants, and seasoned guides in the area of professional fulfillment through self-awareness. Product Description "Whether you prevail or fail, endure or die, depends more on what you do to yourself than on what the world does to you."-Jim Collins Decline can be avoided. Decline can be detected. Decline can be reversed. Amid the desolate landscape of fallen great companies, Jim Collins began to wonder: How do the mighty fall? Can decline be detected early and avoided? How far can a company fall before the path toward doom becomes inevitable and unshakable? How can companies reverse course? In How the Mighty Fall, Collins confronts these questions, offering leaders the well-founded hope that they can learn how to stave off decline and, if they find themselves falling, reverse their course. By understanding the stages of decline, leaders can substantially reduce their chances of falling all the way to the bottom. As Collins' research emphasizes, some companies do indeed recover-in some cases, coming back even stronger. As long as you never get entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains. The mighty can fall, but they can often rise again. About the Author Jim Collins is a student of companies-great ones, good ones, weak ones, failed ones-from young start-ups to venerable sesquicentenarians. The author of the national bestseller Good to Great and coauthor of Built to Last, he serves as a teacher to leaders throughout the corporate and social sectors. His work has been featured in Fortune, BusinessWeek, The Economist, USA Today, and Harvard Business Review.
