In the summer of 1942, the French
police arrested thousands of Jewish families and held them outside of Paris
before shipping them off to Auschwitz. On the 60th anniversary of the roundups,
an expatriate American journalist covering the atrocities discovers a personal
connection--her apartment was formerly occupied by one such family. She resolves
to find out what happened to Sarah, the 10-year-old daughter, who was the only
family member to survive. The story is heart-wrenching, and Polly Stone gives an
excellent performance, keeping a low-key tone through descriptions of horror
that would elicit excessive dramatics from a less talented performer. Her
characters are easy to differentiate, and her French accent is convincing.

The delightful New York Times bestselling
author returns with a hilarious novel about one woman's quest to redo an old
house . . . and her life. After her boss in a high-powered Washington public
relations firm is caught in a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. Out of options, she
reluctantly accepts her father's offer to help refurbish Birdsong, the old
family place he recently inherited in Guthrie, Georgia. All it will take, he
tells her, is a little paint and some TLC to turn the fading Victorian mansion
into a real-estate cash cow. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise when she
arrives in Guthrie. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering
Pepto Bismol-pink dump with duct-taped windows and a driveway full of junk.
There's also a murderously grumpy old lady, one of Dempsey's distant relations,
who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever. Furthermore,
everyone in Guthrie seems to know Dempsey's business, from a smooth-talking
real-estate agent to a cute lawyer who owns the local newspaper. It wouldn't be
so bad if it weren't for the pesky FBI agents who show up on Dempsey's doorstep,
hoping to pry information about her ex-boss from her. All Dempsey can do is roll
up her sleeves and get to work. And before long, what started as a job of
necessity somehow becomes a labor of love and, ultimately, a journey that takes
her to a place she never expected--back home again.

This clever and inventive tale works on three levels:
as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a
touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono
Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning
and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of
importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point
of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up
to him exclaiming that she'd known him all her life. He, however, had never seen
her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly
finds himself time travelling to Clare's childhood and meeting her as a
6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare's points of view, and so
does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left
behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her
overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never
knows where or when he'll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love
is his anchor. The expressive, evocative performances of both actors convey the
protagonists' intense relationship, their personal quirks and their
reminiscences, making this a fascinating audio.

This thoughtful if less than suspenseful thriller from
bestseller Patterson (Eclipse) charts the impact of the brutal murder of black
coed Angela Hall at Caldwell College in Wayne, Ohio, on gifted athlete Mark Darrow,
who discovered the body and later became a nationally renowned lawyer. Mark's
best friend was convicted of the crime, but many aspects of the trial troubled
Mark. Lionel Farr, Caldwell's provost and Mark's former mentor, offers Mark the
post of college president 16 years after Angela's murder. Mark agrees to return
to Caldwell, now struggling with the suspected embezzlement of $900,000 from its
endowment by its current president. With Lionel's support, Mark investigates
both the embezzlement and the old murder. Patterson evokes the quiet schism
between town and gown in Wayne as well as the fragile relationship between
blacks and whites, while Mark's probing hits exposed nerves with fatal results.

Shaffer's debut novel, written with her niece Barrow, is an original account of one writer's relationship with a member of a unique book club formed as an alibi to protect its members from arrest at the hands of the Nazis during WWII. With a small cast of gifted narrators including Paul Boehmer, Susan Duerdan, John Lee, Rosalyn Landor and the enjoyable Juliet Mills, this production is first-class from top to bottom. The narrators' British dialects, each quite regional and equally as different as they are ear-pleasing, serve the story well and allow Shaffer's words to leap from the page into the hearts and minds of her listeners. The final result is an almost theatrical experience with a plethora of enthusiastic performances.

In Rosenfelt's excellent seventh legal
thriller to feature Paterson, N.J., defense attorney Andy Carpenter (after Play
Dead), Andy takes on another canine client--Waggy, a Bernese mountain puppy,
who's somehow connected to the murder of Walter Timmerman, a semi-titan in the
pharmaceutical industry. Andy represents the dog in a custody battle between
Diana, Walter's widow, and her stepson, Steven, who's a suspect in his father's
shooting. Shortly after Andy picks up Waggy from Diana, she dies in a bomb
explosion at her house. When Steven's arrested for Diana's murder, Andy agrees
to represent him. After Andy's police chief girlfriend, Laurie Collins, who's
visiting from Wisconsin, is shot and wounded while playing with Waggy and Tara,
Andy's golden retriever, Andy realizes Waggy was the real target. Rosenfelt
injects this clever installment with courtroom twists, a peek into some scary
DNA research and a romantic surprise.
